What is the Notts Coach Academy?
The County Academy Programme is a coaching initiative aimed at identifying and encouraging talented and enthusiastic junior golfers from all backgrounds who are not currently receiving county coaching. The Academy is aimed at providing opportunities for aspiring junior golfers aged 9-18 ‘to be the best they can be’ and to increase their success, enjoyment and participation in the game. The Academy is the first step on the development pathway within Nottinghamshire and information is shared between the Academy, Men’s Union and Ladies Association to ensure every junior has the opportunity to succeed.
The Academy provides players with high quality coaching and individualized training program according to their own ability. The program takes place over the Autumn/Winter & Spring months and involves 2x6 hour coaching blocks. The Academy is made up 8 centre’s which are located throughout the county and we have 8 Academy Coaches who deliver the structured group coaching (You can read a bit more about each coach under the ‘Academy Coaches’ tab). In addition to the 2 blocks of coaching the Academy also runs a Training Day where the squad members engage in a variety of workshops which cover the rules of golf, strength and conditioning, multi skills sessions related to movements in the golf swing and rounds off with 9 hole competition. Further information relating to last years training day can be viewed under the tab Academy Training Day 2013 and 2014.
On-going support and advice is offered throughout the year with the Academy Squad members being continually encouraged to play as much as possible over the Summer months in both club and County events. Squad members are encouraged to play in the Nottinghamshire Golf events throughout the season with 3 seperate tours to cater for age and abilities of all our players. These tours are a great way for the juniors to experience a variety of courses and help develop their course management skills. This also encompasses an order of merit for those who compete in a minimum of 2 events. The season closes with the Pro-Am which is an unique opportunity for the Squad members to play alongside their coaches and learn from them out on the course. It’s a fantastic event and a great way to round off the season before the next set of coaching begins.
Significant investment is also made in the training and up-skilling of both professional and volunteer coaches within the county to support the program. A training plan including various CDP workshops and presentations is offered to all PGA staff working in Nottinghamshire, ensuring the quality of coaching across the whole county is enhanced.
The overall outcome of the Academy is a coordinated system that provides a comprehensive pathway in a supportive and appropriate environment for young players to achieve their potential.
